Network Status Update

We migrated our servers today (Saturday, January 31, 2009) from our offices on Vine St in Hollywood to our new data center in downtown Los Angeles. The new location will provide additional bandwidth, increased security, additional network redundancy and improved fire and disaster protection. The move was scheduled to take approximately three hours, however I was overly optimistic and consequently underestimated the amount of time in would actually take to move our entire rack of servers  and re-rack them in the new location. The entire move ended up taking approximately seven hours from start to finish, counting almost an hour on the freeway, causing some or all parts of the network to not be accessible during this time.  We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused, but are pleased to be able to provide the additional benefits this move will afford our clients.

Tips to Help Manage Your Email

These tips apply to Microsoft Outlook. Based on the version of Outlook you are using, some of the commands may be slightly different.

There are several tips you can use to keep control of your mailbox. For example, you can use shortcut keys to quickly process e-mail messages. You can automatically move e-mail from certain senders out of your Inbox or delete them altogether. You can even preview messages before you open them to help you prioritize. Check out these tips.

Use keyboard shortcuts

Once you discover keyboard shortcuts, you may find it tough to use your computer without them. Here are three important keyboard shortcuts that you can use to manage e-mail messages in your Outlook Inbox:

  • Press CTRL+D to delete the current e-mail message.
  • Press CTRL+R to reply to the current e-mail message.
  • Press CTRL+F to forward the current e-mail message.

You can also manage junk e-mail in your Outlook Inbox with the following keyboard shortcuts. If the Junk E-mail feature hasn’t been enabled in Outlook, follow these steps first:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Organize, and then click Junk E-Mail.
  2. Set options for handling junk mail and/or adult content messages, and then click Turn on. You can now use the following shortcuts to manage your junk e-mail:
  • Press ALT+A, J, J to add the current e-mail message’s sender to your Junk Senders List.
  • Press ALT+A, J, A to add the current e-mail message’s sender to your Adult Content Senders List.

After running one of these commands, press CTRL+D to delete the current e-mail message.

Automatically manage incoming messages

You can set up rules to have Outlook help you manage incoming e-mail messages. For example, Outlook can:

  • Alert you when you receive a message from your supervisor.

Error message 0x800C0133 and 0x800c013C

Help! I can’t receive my email.

Lately, I’ve received several calls from clients that were unable to receive email. This was a bit of a different problem than I have had to deal with in the past, as most email help requests I get are not being able to send email, with the culprit usually being that port 25 has been blocked by the ISP providing the Internet connection. This was a huge problem a few years ago when SBC decided to block port 25 for all of their customers without telling them. Our phones were ringing off the hook.

This error is usually reported by people using Microsoft Outlook Express and is often accompanied by “All of my email is gone. How do I get it back?

Error message 0x800C013C = Inbox is Full

This error often indicates that your inbox is full or that your Outlook Express data file Inbox.dbx has grown too large. Try moving messages in the inbox to another file on your computer, then try to receive email again. If this does not fix the problem, try the steps in the next section “Error message 0x800C0133″.
